A History of Romanian Theatre from Communism to Capitalism. Children of a Restless Time (Routledge, 2020) unveils the striking transformations taking place in the last three decades of Romanian theater since the 1989 fall of the Berlin Wall.
Based on its author’s experience as a theatre critic and curator, the book questions the relationship between artists and power, both before 1989, behind the Iron Curtain, and in the current global political context, with nationalism manifesting itself in Eastern Europe and beyond, as seen in the critical work of Romanian theatre makers.
The first book on the subject in decades and one to fill a considerable gap in the theatre studies literature available in English, A history of Romanian theatre from Communism to Capitalism. Children of a restless time offers a compelling source of information on modern and contemporary Romanian theatre and will be of great interest to an interdisciplinary audience of scholars and students of contemporary theatre and history studies.
The book will be presented in March and April in six prestigious American Universities: University of Washington, Seattle, University of California, Irvine, University of Arizona, Phoenix, Pace University, New York, Ithaca College and Harvard University, with support from Romanian Cultural Institute in New York.
